Die Ballettoper Les Fêtes de Polymnie (vom Komponisten selbst als Ballet heroïque bezeichnet) schrieb Rameau 1745 als frischgebackener Compositeur de la Musique du Cabinet des Königs ursprünglich für den französischen Hof, doch verhinderte eine Intrige die Vorstellung, so dass die Uraufführung schliesslich nur an der Pariser Academie Royale de Musique stattfand. Auch dort schätzte man mehr und mehr die unterhaltende und abwechslungsreiche Gattung der Ballettoper gegenüber der altehrwürdigen, aber doch sehr reglementierten Tragedie lyrique. Mit Hilfe seines stets innovationsfreudigen Librettisten Louis de Cahusac, der offenbar ebenfalls eine besondere Vorliebe für Chöre und Ballette hatte, schuf er ein buntes Mosaik aus Arien, einfallsreich gestalteten Tänzen und deskriptiven Symphonies, durchsetzt mit lebhaften Choreinlagen. Unter der Leitung von György Vashegyi singen so hervorragende Barock-Spezialisten wie Véronique Gens, Aurélia Legay, Emöke Baráth oder Mathias Vidal, jeweils in verschiedenen Rollen im Prolog und in den drei Aufzügen des Werkes zu hören. Ebenso wie Niquets Aufnahme von Les Fêtes del Hymen et de l Amour (GCD 921629) wird auch diese Einspielung durch einen aufschlussreichen Essay über das Werk und seinen historischen Kontext ergänzt, der aus der Feder von Benoît Dratwicki vom Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles stammt, das diese Aufnahme unterstützt. Composed in 1745, an annus mirabilis for France, Rameau, aided by his reformist librettist Louis de Cahusac s preferences for choruses and ballets, conjured up in addition to sparkling arias and recitatives a dazzling mosaic of intermèdes, passacailles, chaconnes and descriptive symphonies interspersed with vivid choral contributions, which the Purcell Choir and the Orfeo Orchestra deliver with refinement and spirit on this new recording of the festivities. As with the recent 'Les Fêtes de l Hymen et de l Amour' (conducted by Hervé Niquet), this modern-day revindication of 'Les Fêtes de Polymnie' is matched by an essay about the score (placed within its historical context) from Benoît Dratwicki of the supporting institution for this recording, the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles.
