Paul Motians innovatives Schlagzeugspiel in den Trios von Bill Evans und Paul Bley hatte bereits Furore gemacht, als ECM ihm eine eigene Session vorschlug. Conception Vessels öffnete seiner Kreativität Tür und Tor. Durch diese Aufnahmen hören wir die Entwicklung diverser herausragender Motian-Ensembles und auch sein wachsendes Selbstvertrauen als Komponist. In Pauls Musik waren Erinnerungen an türkische und armenische Melodien, die er als Kind gehört hatte, durch seine Liebe zum Jazz gefiltert. Zu Beginn seiner Karriere hatte Motian mit Monk gespielt, dessen eigenwilliger Sinn für Dynamik blieb ihm ein Bezugspunkt, doch liebte er auch die Ausdrucksmöglichkeiten des neuen Jazz. Keith Jarrett und Charlie Haden ermutigten Pauls Höhenflüge auf Conception Vessel bzw. Tribute. Mit Dance und Le Voyage, den zwischen 1977 und 1979 aufgenommenen Trios mit Charles Brackeen, schuf sich Motian eine ganz eigene Klangwelt.
