Händels letztes Oratorium Jephtha HWV 70 (The Triumph of Time and Truth HWV 71 verwendet hauptsächlich ältere Musik wieder) stellt eines seiner Gipfelwerke in diesem Genre dar. REZENSION By the time he came to write what was to be his last major choral work, Handel had completed almost 30 oratorios and more than 40 operas a vast canvas upon which he had displayed his breathtaking ability to portray every facet of human emotion. This final work distills all that has gone before into two hours of deeply profound music, beautifully performed here by Harry Christophers and his stellar cast of soloists. Sophie Bevan is dazzling as the daughter, Iphis, who must accept the dire consequences of her father's vow; her suitor, Hamor (Robin Blaze), is pure in both voice and devotion and James Gilchrist is simply sensational as the anguished Jephtha, breaking our hearts with Waft her, angels, through the sky. ***** --Observer, 21/09/14 The exceptional quality of the music and the performances is a key feature throughout, and right from the powerful, ornate stile antico of Pacelli's opening Veni sponsa Christi for five voices, with its spectacular Alleluia you know you're in safe hands- or should that be voices? --IRR, Sept'14 Handel invested a lifetime's experience in the composition of Jephtha, arguably his finest oratorio. The late work, to a libretto by the clergyman and classicist Thomas Morell, deals with the tragedy of the Old Testament hero Jephtha, who vows to God that in return for victory in battle he will sacrifice the first thing he meets on his homecoming. That thing happens to be his daughter. Jephtha is resigned to keep his word, until an angel intervenes to stay the slaught rous hand . Morell's interpretation of the story spares Iphis from the knife; rather, she is to be offered in dedication to God, in pure and virgin state forever , small comfort for individuals tortured by the dark shadows of the mind. Handel's response to the tale's human drama gave rise to music of extraordinary power. The composer became blind in his left eye and was afflicted by serious ill health while working on Jephtha, conditions that make the score's invention and insight all the more remarkable. Christophers has an uncanny knack for setting the ideal speeds for each number Harry Christophers and The Sixteen have lived with Jephtha for many years. I remember a fine performance they gave in the late 1990s at Freemason's Hall in London, done from memory as a work of music theatre. Their new recording, made in St Augustine's Church, Kilburn, was prefaced by concert performances at Bath Abbey and the Barbican Centre. Christophers has an uncanny knack for setting the ideal speeds for each number, often lively but never rushed, without losing sight of the oratorio's spacious dramatic landscape. Listen to the heart-breaking conclusion of For joys so vast too little price is paid , exquisitely sung by Sophie Bevan as Jephtha's daughter Iphis, for a sense of the close communion between conductor, soloist and band. --Sinfini Music, 14/11/14 Christophers's considered view of Handel, devoid of extremes and eccentricities, and the work of his outstanding choir amd orchestra make this a solid recommendation. --IRR, Dec'14 Harry Christophers's taut, vibrant and beautifully sprung account is bright and dazzling. Performance **** Recording ***** BBC Music Magazine, Jan'15 /// One of the best things I've heard on disc from Christophers **** --Early Music Today, June-Aug'15
