Le Duc d'Albe stars the glorious American soprano Angela Meade, making her debut recording for Opera Rara. Joining Angela, and returning to Opera Rara following his astonishing performance on the label's award-winning recording of Donizetti's Les Martyrs, is tenor Michael Spyres, as well as Laurent Naouri, who recently sang on our recording of Gounod's La Colombe. Le Duc d'Albe was composed to a libretto by Eugène Scribe and Charles Duveyrier in 1839, but Donizetti set it aside after completing only two acts, never to return to the score. It is those two magnificent acts which are recorded here. REZENSION Angry Belgians, snarling Spaniards and a lot of unfinished business: it sounds like a bad night at the European parliament. Yet the 16th-century plot of Donizetti's Le Duc d'Albe is less important than the tangled story of why the opera remained unfinished, even though Donizetti started writing it nine years before he died and seven years before his syphilis-triggered insanity condemned him to an asylum. The notorious machinations at the Paris Opéra in the 1840s forced him constantly to rethink his plans, appease the whims of rival sopranos and rework his operas for other cities. Le Duc d' Albe was repeatedly put to one side, and in the end Donizetti completed (or almost completed) only two acts out of a projected five. Forty years later a minor composer called Salvi did a reasonable, if stylistically incongruous, completion in Italian. And in recent years others have had a go too. However, Opera Rara, freed from the need to present a coherent dramatic spectacle on stage, here presents the original torso with the minimum of tampering. Good decision: there's enough first-rate Donizetti here to justify this approach, even though the story of heroic Belgian defiance to Spanish invaders is left hanging. In particular, Hélène d'Egmont, a Joan of Arc figure urging her compatriots to stand up for freedom, is given a couple of sizzling arias that Angela Meade dispatches with magnificent power and assurance. Michael Spyres is also rock-solid in the tenorial stratosphere inhabited by the hotheaded Flemish patriot Henri, while Laurent Naouri seizes his few opportunities to be dark and dastardly in the title role. That said, the most exciting moments on this double-CD are supplied by the Hallé Orchestra and the Opera Rara Chorus under Mark Elder's zestful direction. Indeed, many of Donizetti's pulsating, militaristic ensembles anticipate Verdi in their confrontational power. Talking of which, if you want to know how the story ends, check out Verdi's Sicilian Vespers. It uses the same libretto, albeit transferred to the other end of Europe. **** --The Times, 26/2/16 Mark Elder conducts a lavish presentation of the half-finished opera. Ft, 26/2/16 /// ALBUM OF THE WEEK .Sunday Times,6/3/16 /// Mark Elder brings conviction, stylistic nous and a wonderful airy clarity to the score, and his Manchester orchestra play very well. Gramophone,April'16 /// The completed acts show Donizetti at the top of his form. Performance ***** Recording ***** BBC MUSIC OPERA CHOICE.BBC Music Magazine, May'16 /// I am left with the overwhelming feeling of what the opera world has missed which in truth is all that one can ask of an unfinished work. --Music Web, May'16 Donizetti never got to finish writing Le Duc d Albe, thanks to the vacillations of the Paris Opéra's impresario, Léon Pillet something the composer regretted until his death. However, the first two acts survive almost intact. Those are what Opera Rara gives us and, under Mark Elder's propulsive baton, the highlights keep coming. There's a strong duet for the Duke, leader of the Spanish oppressors, and Henri, the Flemish orphan hero whose father is, of course, hiding in plain sight; a patriotic chorus worthy of Verdi; and an emotionally wide-ranging scene for Henri and Hélène, the vengeful heroine who is holed up in a brewery this is Belgium, after all. Michael Spyres's clarion tenor shines throughout as Henri. Angela Meade's soprano is squally in Hélène's act one rabble-rousing, but commanding in all the right ways in act two, and Laurent Naouri and David Stout are excellent as the Duke and his snarling henchman. **** Guardian,4/3/16 /// Fine preparation and attention to detail in the musical execution, marvellously evident from first note to last.
