PRODUKTBESCHREIBUNGEN KURZBESCHREIBUNG The 6th installment of PentaTone's Wagner Edition brings US to the epic story of Tannheñuser, performed by top Wagner singers, the Rundfunkchor Berlin, Rundfunk Sinfonie Orchester Berlin, and conductor Marek Janowski. This Wagner Edition represents the first time in recording history that a label has recorded all major Wagner operas with the same orchestra, choir and conductor. REZENSION Few conductors get the chance to record the Ring twice. Thirty years have passed since Janowski's acclaimed Eurodisc studio version from Dresden (now reissued by Sony). His new concert-recorded cycle comes as the climax of a three- year project covering the 10 ''Bayreuth-canonised'' works, from The Flying Dutchman to Parcifal. The results have been mixed, but this Rheingold augurs well for the cycle. Janowski's 2013 cast lacks the big names of his earlier set, but he fields several outstanding singers from the rising Wagnerian generation: Maria Radner's lush-voiced, youthful Erda is a far cry from the matronly sounding Earth Mothers of tradition, while Gunther Groissbock's suave and beautifully sung Fasolt underlines the recent trend to portray the milder of the two giants sympathetically. Tomasz Konieczny lacks the noble timbre of an ideal Wotan, but he is authoritative. The vocal stars here are the incisive yet lyrically sung Loge of Christian Elsner and Jochen Schmeckenbecher's powerful projection of Alberich's megolamania and resentment. Above all, this is Janowski's triumph. His decision to focus on the music at the expense of theatrical ideas has been criticised, but he is vindicated by the gripping, dramatic playing here.
