PRODUKTBESCHREIBUNGEN The three Italian opera productions presented in Tokyo between September 2 and October 2, 1976, were all major events. First came the double bill of Cavalleria Rusticana and Pagliacci starring Plácido Domingo in both lead tenor roles, and then Adriana lecouvreur starring Montserrat Caballé, José Carreras, and Fiorenza Cossotto (who also sang Santuzza in Cavalleria). Finally, there were the first performances in Japan of Verdi's monumental Simon Boccanegra, with a dream cast of singers, all world-renowned for their portrayals of the opera's protagonists: Piero Cappuccilli, Katia Ricciarelli, Nicolai Ghiaurov, Giorgio merighi, and Lorenzo Saccomani. Leading the performance is Oliviero De Fabritiis, for whom Baccanegra held a special place in his long and distinguished conducting career. With the release of this Simon Boccanegra, VAI Iis proud to make available all three unforgettable productions from the Fall 1976 Tokyo Opera season. Note: The original video master for this performance contains embedded Japanese subtitles that remain on screen throughout. To these, VAI has added optional sub-titles in other languages.
