Im engeren Sinn versteht man darunter die Musik der arabisch sprechenden mohammedanischen Völker Vorderasiens und der Mittelmeerländer, im weiteren Sinn zum Beispiel auch die der Neupersisch und Türkisch sprechenden und der islamischen Kolonialvölker. Abgesehen von einigen mittelalterlichen, theoretischen Schriften kennt die islamische Musik keine Notenschrift. Auch die sogenannte \"Klassische Musik\", die den höchsten Rang einnimmt, wurde nur mündlich überliefert.   Die 17 CDs bieten einen Querschnitt der Musik aus den obengenannten Völkern und Regionen. Dabei werden ebenso klare Unterschiede, bedingt durch lokale Traditionen, wie auch das strenge Festhalten an der überlieferten Tonsystematik deutlich. Die klassische Kunstmusik des Islam nahm viele dieser Strömungen, auch orientalisch-christliche und jüdische, in sich auf, dazu wurde das Instrumentarium kontinuierlich erweitert. Erst in den letzten 100 Jahren nimmt der Einfluss der Musik der westlichen Welt und damit eine gravierende Umgestaltung der Musiktradition immer mehr zu.   Die vorliegenden Aufnahmen legen deshalb grossen Wert auf Authentizität und spiegeln Volkmusik wie Kunstmusik unverfälscht wider. Traditionelle Instrumente, Formen und Techniken werden in den englischsprachigen Booklets ausführlich erklärt, auch jede einzelne Aufnahme wird ausreichend berücksichtigt.
